From Simple Breathing Tests to Advanced Airway Diagnostics

At Lung & Allergy Health Associates, we deliver a full spectrum of pediatric pulmonary care tailored to children of all ages—from infants to teens. Our tiered approach ensures that every child receives the right level of evaluation, from routine screenings to advanced diagnostic procedures. Explore our service levels below:

Foundational Testing for Common Conditions

Ideal for: Initial respiratory evaluation, asthma, chronic cough, treatment response

  • Spirometry
Measures how well air moves in and out of the lungs—essential for diagnosing asthma, restrictive lung disease, or airflow obstruction.
  • FeNO (Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide)
A simple, non-invasive test that detects airway inflammation—commonly used in asthma management to guide anti-inflammatory therapy.
  • Pulse Oximetry & Exercise Oximetry
Tracks oxygen saturation during rest and activity to assess respiratory function in everyday situations.
  • 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
A practical tool to assess endurance and detect exercise-induced hypoxia or fatigue in pediatric patients.

Advanced Diagnostics for Complex Cases

Ideal for: Refractory asthma, unexplained shortness of breath, suspected structural lung disease

  • Impulse Oscillometry (IOS)
Sensitive and child-friendly; detects small airway abnormalities often missed by traditional spirometry. Perfect for children under 7.
  • Plethysmography (“Body Box”)
Offers a detailed look at total lung volumes and airway resistance—helpful in distinguishing between obstructive and restrictive diseases.
  • High-Resolution Chest CT (HRCT)
Advanced imaging to evaluate for bronchiectasis, chronic infection, or interstitial lung disease.
  • Sweat Chloride Testing
The gold standard for cystic fibrosis diagnosis—performed with minimal discomfort.

Interventional & Functional Pulmonary Procedures

Ideal for: Persistent or unexplained symptoms, immune dysfunction, exercise intolerance, and structural airway evaluation

  • Flexible Bronchoscopy
A minimally invasive scope procedure used to visualize the airways, obtain cultures, and identify anomalies like malacia or airway lesions.
  • Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL)
Performed during bronchoscopy to collect lung fluid samples—used to detect infection, inflammation, or aspiration.
  • Endobronchial & Transbronchial Biopsies
Tissue sampling for diagnosing conditions like granulomatous disease, interstitial lung disease, or chronic inflammation.
  • Surgical Lung Biopsy
Reserved for complex, unexplained lung pathology. Conducted in partnership with pediatric surgery and pathology teams.
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)
A highly specialized test that measures the combined performance of the heart, lungs, and muscles during exercise.
    Used to:

    • Evaluate unexplained shortness of breath or fatigue
    • Distinguish between pulmonary, cardiac, or deconditioning causes
    • Assess readiness for surgery or athletic participation
    • Guide management in chronic lung disease or congenital heart conditions
Conducted with pediatric-trained staff using cycle ergometry or treadmill protocols customized for children and adolescents.
